GINAxC Reimagines Santa Lucia in New Christmas Single – Out November 6

On November 6, GINAxC releases Santa Lucia (Heal My Broken Heart) on all major streaming platforms — a new interpretation of the traditional Santa Lucia melody, featuring completely new English lyrics written by the artist herself.

In Sweden, December 13 and the celebration of Lucia usually means eating far too many saffron buns and watching preschool children either sing loudly and proudly in a Lucia procession — or completely refuse to take part.

It is warm, familiar and deeply rooted in Swedish Christmas tradition.

But Lucia’s story was never really about gingerbread and saffron buns.

Behind the candles, white dresses and beautiful processions is a much darker story of faith, suffering, persecution and ultimately martyrdom. Over the centuries, Lucia became a symbol of light in darkness — and it is that meaning that sits at the heart of my interpretation.

Santa Lucia (Heal My Broken Heart) is told from the perspective of someone who is heartbroken, lost and struggling to find a way forward.

Instead of simply singing about Lucia, the narrator turns directly to her.

"Come and set my soul free. Light and hope all for me. Heal my cold and broken heart, Santa Lucia."

Here, Lucia becomes a symbol of the possibility that suffering does not always have to be the final destination.

The song is about that strange place where darkness and hope can exist at the same time — when you may not be able to see the way out yet, but some small part of you is still asking for light.

In a way, it is both a tribute to the light in the darkness and a reminder of the darkness behind the light.

The new recording moves away from a traditional Christmas arrangement and into a more mysterious, cinematic indie-pop atmosphere. It remains intimate and melancholic, but gradually opens up into something larger and almost ceremonial toward the end.

Following Christmas Without You

The release follows last year’s Christmas single Christmas Without You, which became one of the most surprising releases of my first Christmas season as GINAxC.

Released in November 2025, the song entered Apple Music Holiday charts in nine markets across Europe and Asia, including China, Mongolia, Ukraine, Estonia, Luxembourg and others, peaking at #71 in China. It did so without any promotional campaign.

And now, before the 2026 Christmas season has even properly begun, Christmas Without You has already started receiving seasonal radio attention again.

The song is currently being played by Christmas Songs Radio, an international online station dedicated entirely to Christmas music, while several other Christmas radio stations have confirmed that they are adding the song to their upcoming seasonal rotations.

Not bad for an independent Christmas ballad from the Helsingborg area of Sweden.

Which does leave one slightly amusing question:

When are Swedish radio stations going to discover the international Christmas song coming from their own backyard?

Maybe this year.

Until then, I’ll keep doing what I do — writing the songs I want to write, finding darkness in places where everyone else sees glitter, and apparently turning Swedish Christmas traditions into heartbreak songs.
